Gone are the days where extreme dye jobs and perms…wrong!

These styles are actually back. And no doubt these styles cause an immense amount of damage to hair. But instead of feeling hopeless about the damage done to your hair, there are a few steps you can take to help rekindle those locks in a matter of a few days.

  1. Wet your hair less often. It’s a fact that when you whet your hair, it makes the hair swell from the inside which pushes the cuticle up. When you do this over and over again, you will get frizzy hair and a lot of breakage. The best thing to do is not to wash your hair more than you have to. Ideally skip a day. Experts recommend using dry shampoos that contain oil and odor absorbers.
  2. Use a pre-shampoo. Pre-shampoos work like sealants because they help to smooth the hair’s cuticles before it actually gets wet, meaning less damage in the long run. It also helps to protect against friction.
  3. Get wise about the shampoo that you use. Instead of worrying about sulphate of non sulphate, look at the detergents that work to strip oil and color from hair. If you’re shampoo says it helps to repair damage on the label, it will contain proteins that work to strengthen the hair. If you use hairspray, you will need to use an alternate cleansing conditioner that removes the entire residue.
  4. Conditioners are vital if you blow dry your hair. It’s important to choose a conditioner that offers heat protection because it provides a layer of coating that protects against the hot air.
  5. You can also try using a heat protectant spray. The best way to do this is to grab small sections of damp air and spray each one down the full length. Then comb your hair to evenly distribute the product.
  6. Do not rub your hair with a towel instead perform a blowout which will take half the time. By adding a quick dry spray you can protect your hair against heat.
  7. Using an old T-shirt instead of a towel to dry your hair is much more effective and better for hair maintenance. Smooth cotton T-shirts are not as rough as towels but they will do the same job when it comes to driving.
  8. Be creative when you blow-dry your hair. One common trick that hairdressers use is to dampen the hair into loose braids and work each side accordingly.
  9. Treat yourself to weekly scalp treatments because they make a huge difference according to leading hairdressers and dermatologists. They are great for cleaning hair follicles, even better than shampoos. My hairdresser recommends using dandruff shampoos for this purpose because there are great for treating the scalp.
  10. You can use shine sprays and serums to help jazz up your hair but they are not always the best. Dry oils contain the least amount of silicones and oils create the most convincing shine.

  1. I feel you could have written something about the effects of hair straighteners. After all, they are the “in” thing at the moment with the younger girls.
