My wife’s best friend found out she had some dense mass in her left breast. The only way to find out how serious it was, was to undergo a biopsy. The following week, while she waited for her test results, Time stood still for her. And this got me thinking that breast cancer is a serious problem today and it affects many women and is something that I would like to discuss on this site.
A recent study seems to suggest that one in eight women in the US alone will probably develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. The American Cancer Society believes that somewhere between 232,000 new cases of breast cancer is likely to be diagnosed, and some 30,000 women will actually die from cancer. Unfortunately breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer in women, only to be outranked by lung cancer. The typical woman’s risk of breast cancer doubles if a first degree relative i.e. sister or mother has experienced it. Around 15% of the women who are she diagnosed with breast cancer usually have somebody closely related who gone through the same.
There are steps you can take that could help to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Here are my top tips:
- Eat healthy regularly. Keep a well-balanced diet that contains high quality meats and vegetables consisting of proteins healthy fats, nutrient dense foods and the like. Make sure you eat plenty of essential fatty acids and antioxidant foods. Try to stick to organic foods although this is more expensive than buying the usual crap that from the market, and reduce the amount of sugars and simple carbohydrates that your diet contains.
- Take part in increase physical activity and this will surely reduce the chances of developing breast cancer by up to 30%. A simple walk that lasts no more than 30 minutes for five days a week is perfect.
- Cut out smoking if you smoke and this will help to reduce the risk also.
- As bizarre as it sounds, breastfeeding is really healthy for your baby, and it’s also great for you. According to studies, you can reduce your risk by up to 4% for every 12 months of breastfeeding you do. Experts believe that the longer you breastfeed the better it is for your breast health. Breastfeeding helps to lower estrogen levels during lactation. Estrogen is a major fuel for breast cancer.
- Reduce your alcoholic intake.
- Keep your weight at healthy levels. Obesity has shown to increase the risk of breast cancer especially when women go through the menopause.
- Be wary of harmful chemicals that may exist in your cosmetics. Many of these chemicals are now being linked to the risks of cancer outbreaks. According to an article I read the other day, 99% of aggressive breast cancer tumors have some levels of parabens inside them. You will also find parabens in many shampoos, deodorant and body lotions. You see where I am going with this?
- Try to avoid hormone replacement therapy at all costs. Hormone replacement therapy has shown to aggravate symptoms of breast cancer in particular.
- The lymphatic system consists of vessels and note that run throughout the body. Your immune system relies on this system to keep flowing. The fluid running through the channels travels through the body destroying diseases. The best way to do this is to indulge in self-massage, salt scrubs, and dry brushing to keep all the lymph flowing.
- Get into the habit of examining your breast on a regular basis. You know your breasts best.
